Since our winning of a contest for a new concert studio for the BBC Symphony Orchestra together with Gade Mortensen Akustik in 2004, we have been called upon as advisors for a number of different projects including the new concert studios in Cardiff and Manchester. One such project had to do with acoustical improvements at the Mermaid Theatre. The theatre was used as a concert and recording venue for the BBC Concert Orchestra, an orchestra with a broad repertoire. Since existing plans of the building mostly lacked information about ventilation ducts and interior decoration, we decided to laser scan the hall and from that create a detailed 3D model for our calculations.

The laser scanning technique of existing spaces provide us with exact spatial information even when plans are lacking or where irregular surfaces make it difficult to perform calculations. Among other places, we have even applied the technique to such a complex hall as the Grosser Musikvereinssaal in Vienna, with all its many details. In that case, no existing plans provided enough detailed information. From this laser scanning and following calculations and with the help of acoustic measurements, we have been able to learn a great deal about the world-renowned concert hall and its acoustics.
