Rebuilding an old public bath to form an outstanding concert hall was the method for realising the Gävle concert hall, although there was in fact nothing left of the old structure but the foundations. The result is a very intimate hall seating about 800 people. It has substantial height and a gallery ringed with windows at the top.

The reverberation time is generous and can be reduced somewhat through the use of textiles in the gallery openings. The hall’s basic shape is oval, which has necessitated a number of diffusing surfaces at the back of the hall. The acoustic properties have been highly praised and the hall is popular for recordings.

The concert hall, which is home to the Gävle Symphony Orchestra, also contains a smaller auditorium, the Bo Lindesal, along with rehearsal and practice rooms for the orchestra. The building is attractively placed by the Gävle River, rising up like an oval box dressed in blue tiles. The building was inaugurated in 1998.
